LEWISTON (WGME) – Lewiston is getting a new hockey team.

The Lewiston Maineiacs are set to join the United States Premier Hockey League this season. They will play their home games at the Colisée.

The announcement comes as the Colisée is under new management. Mill Town Sports and Entertainment, a company based out of Massachusetts, will also be the owners of the building when the sale closes.

President and CEO Nate Bostic says he knows Lewiston is a hockey town, and he plans on keeping it that way.

“It is a passionate town. It’s a passionate group of fans. As much as we want other events here, hockey is a huge priority,” Bostic said.

City Administrator Bryan Kaenrath is excited to see what the new managers decide to do with the venue.

“As we look to continue to build the city’s image and bring people into town, visitors and others here, it’s a huge incentive for us,” Kaenrath said.

The Maineiacs will play junior hockey, the same level as the Maine Nordiques, but in a different league.

But at this point, the Nordiques still don’t have a home yet next season. Bostic remains optimistic it will be under the Colisée’s roof.

“There’s still options on the table to have them here, and we’re hoping that gets worked out over the next few days,” Bostic said.

Bostic also expects the Colisée to host concerts, as well as high school sports including soccer, basketball, wrestling and boxing.

As for the sale, Bostic expects to close within the next six months.
