NOTRE DAME — Sheahan is hardly a stranger to the program.
Playing for the Irish from 2004-2008, Sheahan served as an alternate captain on the team that was the national runner-up in 2008, and more recently, the past two years as an assistant head coach.
On March 17th, Brock Sheahan was introduced as the 5th head coach in the history of Notre Dame hockey.
And he insists that he’s not interested in rebuilding the program: He thinks it’s ready to win now.
“The type of people we have in the locker room. They’re highly motivated,” Sheahan told WSBT 22 Sports on Monday, in his first local sit-down interview since being named the head coach.
“They had a great spring. Almost our entire teams back here in the summer. The guys that we’re bringing back, guys like Danny Nelson, guys like Paul Knuble, Paul Fischer, that entire class. We have a small senior class, but they’re highly motivated. We (also) have some young talents, so I’m really excited about that.”
And the fact that nobody transferred from the Notre Dame roster when longtime coach Jeff Jackson retired after 20 seasons?
“It’s exciting. It shows me how excited this group is about the direction of the program,” Sheahan says.
“It tells you a lot about the current players and the type of people that they are, right? I think they’re highly motivated to get to work, because in reality, we’ve started culturally, but on the ice we haven’t really started.
That starts in August as a team. They’re doing their work, so I’m excited to see how it goes.”
