Shortly after answering questions about what will happen following his last season under contract in Washington, Ovechkin had to address a rather fantasy-hockey trade idea connecting two Pittsburgh Penguins superstars to the Washington Capitals.
In an interview after playing in the “Match of the Year” charity game in Moscow, the Capitals captain was asked by Match TV whether a trade for Penguins captain Sidney Crosby or fellow Russian legend Evgeni Malkin could improve Washington’s Stanley Cup chances.
“If this happens, it would be wonderful,” Ovechkin said. “If not, we will fight on our own.”
The question came amid growing speculation surrounding the future of Pittsburgh’s long-time core, including franchise icon Crosby.

The Penguins have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons and could be facing a full teardown sooner than later, although all signs point toward the aging core staying together.
Crosby, 37, is under contract through 2026 and has a full no-movement clause in his deal. Malkin, 38, has one year remaining on his $24.4 million deal and will likely retire after his contract ends next summer.

While Ovechkin and Crosby have built a mutual respect over the years after being traded with the No. 1 overall picks of their respective drafts, the idea of either being traded—let alone to the other’s team—remains far-fetched.

Moreover, both Penguins players have publicly committed to finishing their NHL careers in Pittsburgh, and the Penguins are unlikely to help the Capitals strengthen their roster without a sizable return going their way.
