Welcome back to the PhHN Daily!
We have a fun one today. Last night was the perfect example of how to end an all-star event. My goodness, was that entertaining! I don’t necessarily have an outlet for those sorts of thoughts, so I found a way to sneak it in.
In Flyers news: our latest mailbag is out. Make sure to check that out! We talk about all sorts of fun topics.
The NHL schedule is being released today at 1:00 p.m., so get your plans ready for the season!
Around the league, a division rival has a thin line to walk this season, but what should they do? A Flyers target is off the market (for now), ELCs are being signed, and much more! Get it all on the PhHN Daily!
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: Are you wondering about the future of Porter Martone? What about the defensive pairs? Or, are you fascinated by the ’26 free agent class? Well, if you are, those topics are addressed in our latest mailbag, so make sure to check it out!
Did you miss the window to submit your questions? Not a problem! Part two of the mailbag is in the works, and the window to submit questions remains open. Submit your questions here.
Speaking of Porter Martone, what should the Flyers do with him? Should he make the Flyers, return to the OHL, or is he NCAA-bound? The future of the Flyers’ 2025 6th overall pick remains unknown.
Side note here: Would you be interested in a story breaking down which schools could be potential players for Martone if he decides to go NCAA?
The Athletic ($): Just as he ranked the top-100 prospects heading into the summer, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler ranked the top-20 drafted goalie prospects. Despite not selecting one in the 2025 draft, the Flyers did have one goalie make the list.
Phillies: Not particularly Flyers related, but it is Philly related, so I’ll throw it in here. Did anyone else watch the MLB All-Star game? More importantly, did anybody see three pitches, three Schwarbombs?
Kyle Schwarber went nuclear in the first swing-off to end an MLB All-Star Game. It was tied 6-6 after nine innings. Much like how hockey goes to a shootout, the ASG format allows for a swing-off–a mini home run derby. Schwarber hit bombs on all three of his swings, giving the NL the win and also earning himself the ASG MVP honors. It was a pretty cool night for Schwarber and the Phils.
National Hockey Now, NHL Rumors, and News
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Should the Penguins tank for McKenna, or should they try to win games? Well, Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now sort of says neither. Check out his latest on the very narrow line the Penguins have this season.
Chicago Hockey Now: ELCs are being signed! It started with Victor Eklund on Long Island a little while back. Now, his Djurgardens IF teammate, Anton Frondell, has inked his ELC with the Blackhawks. Greg Boysen breaks down the move.
NHL.com: Guy Gadowski, the Penn State men’s hockey head coach, met with the media yesterday to talk about the offseason. There was a massive elephant in the room. The hot topic: Gavin McKenna. During my three years covering the team, we never had a summer Zoom with Gadowski. Adam Kimelman of NHL.com wrote about the excitement in Hockey Valley.
Buffalo Sabres: Many of us, including myself, were interested in the fit of Sabres LHD Bo Byram with the Flyers’ defense. Now, it is all a moot point (for now). Byram inked a two-year, $6.25M AAV deal that will carry him to UFA in ’27.
