A former Vancouver Canucks prospect has officially become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday morning after his team decided to terminate his entry-level contract.
On Wednesday morning, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman gave an update on the fate of those two prospects and what happens next for both of them, effective immediately.
Former Vancouver Canucks prospect becomes unrestricted free agent
In a post on X, Elliotte Friedman revealed that Ty Voit, who was a prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with former Canucks prospect Joni Jurmo have cleared unconditional waivers and will have their contracts terminated.
With Voit and Jurmo’s contracts now terminated, both players will become unrestricted free agents and are able to sign with any other club in the National Hockey League, however for the former Canucks prospect, it seems quite likely he’ll be leaving North America.
The Espoo, Finland native was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round, 82nd overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and less than two months after he was acquired by the Calgary Flames, he put pen-to-paper on a two-year, entry-level contract.
Jurmo’s first season in North America wasn’t great by any means, but understandably, it’s takes time to adjust and the 23-year-old would go on to finish the year with zero points in 17 games with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, along with ten points in 12 ECHL games with the Rapid City Rush.
Before Jurmo made the jump to North America and signed with the Calgary Flames, he played for five different clubs in Finland – JYP, Kiekko-Espoo, Jukurit, Ilves and KooKoo, and if he does decide to return to his home country, perhaps we could see him land with one of his former teams for the 2025-26 campaign and potentially beyond.
