The Detroit Red Wings have done little during the NHL offseason. On the second day of the 2025 NHL Draft, Detroit made its biggest move by acquiring goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round selection.
Gibson should solidify the Red Wings’ net, but the team still needs more firepower to make its first Stanley Cup playoff appearance since 2016. So, what is the latest on Detroit’s plans during the 2025 NHL offseason while the rest of the league continues to be quiet?

According to Frank Seravalli on Bleacher Report, the Red Wings are among several teams that are still in the mix for a “top six forward” during the NHL offseason. There are some intriguing options available, such as Pittsburgh Penguins wings Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, Florida Panthers wing Evan Rodrigues, and Seattle Kraken wing Jared McCann.
Detroit tried to sign Nikolaj Ehlers before an agreement with the Carolina Hurricanes, but he wasn’t interested in a potential partnership. With the NHL offseason rolling forward, the Red Wings need to acquire a top six forward and more help on defense to have their best opportunity at making the Stanley Cup playoffs.
