HALLOWELL, Maine (WABI) – The Maine Highlanders are back from their trip to Rockland, Mass. for the 2025 Special Hockey International Tournament.
The players were thrilled with their experience at Lovell Arena against players from other countries.
Next year, they will be going to Toronto for the same event.
“It’s really nice to be able to do tournaments. I’ve never done more than maybe JV high school, so it’s nice to be able to do high-level stuff,” said Brandon Wear, goalie.
“It was good. I enjoyed it, and I’m looking forward to Toronto,” said Kristian Joliat, forward, defenseman.
“It’s been amazing. I have four boys that are playing on this team with all varying abilities. They are so thankful to come, participate with peers, and just enjoy the opportunity to play hockey,” said Kelly Donegan, parent.
“Last week, there was a girl there. She was a real role model to Charlotte, so it will be nice to expand it a little bit and have more gender diversity,” said Martin Abel, parent.
The program brought two full teams to compete in the B and C levels of the tournament.
There’s plans to expand into Falmouth in the near future.
