With a hefty new contract lasting for the next six NHL seasons, Matthew Knies has cemented his spot on the Toronto Maple Leafs roster and is hoping to make an immediate impact.
As for goals he has set for himself, Knies has confirmed there’s one, and it’s massive.
“I didn’t really think about it. It was going to get handled in the summer. I didn’t think about it until I settled down and was planning out my training. It’s a relief that it’s done and that I can settle down and be apart of this franchise for another 6 years and hopefully be a part of a group that can bring the Stanley cup home.”
Maple Leafs Matthew Knies Wants a Stanley Cup Before his New Deal Ends
With Mitch Marner leaving the Maple Leafs, and recently leaving fans feeling even more unsettled after a video emerged of him practicing in Vegas Golden Knights gear, Knies will have every opportunity to become a part of the plan to replace Marner’s offense. Knies averaged 18:31 of ice time per game in 2024-25, a figure that’s almost certain to shoot up in 2025-26.Knies’ mindset is exactly what Leafs GM Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube want from the players going into the new season following a disappointing exit from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s very important that players have confidence in themselves and their teammates if they want to win hockey’s ultimate prize.
