San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro is no stranger to trade rumors.
With the upcoming 2025-2026 season being the last year of his four-year $13 million contract, the noise around the Sharks’ alternate captain has gotten even louder.
According to The Fourth Period, Ferraro hasn’t officially asked the Sharks to trade him. However, with San Jose signing multiple defensemen this off-season, Ferraro would be open to finding a new home.
TFP also reports that the San Jose Sharks are open to moving Ferraro. This will be the 27-year-old’s first time facing unrestricted free agency in 2026.

“The Sharks are open to moving Ferraro, who is now in the last year of his contract. He hasn’t asked for a trade, but he would be open to a change of scenery, and with San Jose adding three new defencemen, now might be the time,” TFP writes. “Teams that reached out during the season will poke around this off-season.”

Through his six seasons with the Sharks, Ferraro has been nothing but a soldier for his team. Since joining the Sharks in 19-20, the defenseman still hasn’t played a Stanley Cup Playoff game in his career.
While he has never played a full 82-game season, Ferraro has only missed a handful of games every year due to injury. Often among the leaders in the NHL in blocked shots, Ferraro’s tough play style could fit a playoff-contending team. A role as a No. 4 or No. 5 d-man could fit better than what he plays for the Sharks.
He’s been thrown into a challenging circumstance during his time in San Jose. Ferrero is trying to develop his game for the NHL while his team undergoes a complete rebuild. The Sharks defenseman has stepped up on the ice and off the ice when it comes to team struggles, winning the Media Good Guy award in each of the past two seasons.

In 78 games last season, Ferraro had five goals and 12 assists.
Ranked as No. 9 on TFP’s Summer Trade List, Ferraro is linked to multiple teams: Colorado, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, and Calgary.
