The incomparable Ted Lindsay was born on this date, July 29, in 1925. He died in 2019 at age 93, but his memory lives on because he played with overflowing passion.  In the observance of the 100th anniversary of his birth, noted NHL historian and gifted writer David Stubbs penned a must-read tribute to the man nicknamed “Terrible Ted.”

Stubbs starts the article with an anecdote about Lindsay once being introduced to PGA star Billy Casper who was clearly unimpressed with Lindsay’s stature. Lindsay was 5-foot-8, 163 pounds on his tallest and heaviest days.

“You were the scourge of the NHL?,” Casper asked incredulously.

“When I put my skates on, I am 6-foot-5,” Lindsay replied.

That story, told perfectly by Stubbs,  sums up why Lindsay is one of the greatest players in NHL history. He played the game as if he were nuclear powered, always brandishing a warrior’s mentality. He always played for his teammates and his team. Lindsay was a one-of-a-kind player. This is a must-read story if you love NHL history.
