A Kraken, a troll and a bear met in a shallow river. It sounds like the beginning of a funny joke, but this was no laughing matter when the Seattle Kraken were shooting a promotional video in Alaska.

Seattle forward John Hayden was joined by the team’s troll mascot on a fly-fishing outing in Katmai National Park. The trip was part of a Kraken visit to promote local youth hockey. During the video shoot, a bear showed up and didn’t seem to like the idea of folks being in his or her fishing spot. As the bear charged into the water, the Kraken crew, dressed in waders, retreated.

The bear to be pursuing the blue-haired mascot named Buoy. Maybe the bear was fascinated by his colorful look or maybe Buoy was last in the race to retreat.

“I want to blame it on Buoy,” Hayden said on the video. “They were pretty interested in his look.”

The bear encounter occurred in June, but it came to light now because the Kraken included it in their promotional video. The Kraken never intended to use a bear in the video, but decided to include it. The Kraken had hired guides just in case something like this happened. They moved Hayden and Buoy immediately out of the water.  Brown bears frequent Brooks River in the park, eating salmon as they leap upstream to spawn.
