The San Jose Sharks have traded defenseman Henry Thrun to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Ryan Reaves.

Reaves is a long-time rival of the Sharks, dating back to his days with the Vegas Golden Knights. The 38-year-old tough guy has played in 912 NHL games with the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Maple Leafs, and Knights.

In his NHL career, Reaves has 137 points (63 goals, 74 assists) and 1100 penalty minutes.

“We’re excited to welcome Ryan to the organization,” Sharks GM Mike Grier said in a statement. “He will bring energy, personality, physical play and toughness to our group. He has been a part of many winning teams, and I witnessed firsthand the positive impact he can bring to a group when I was with the Rangers.”

Reaves is going into the final year of a 3-year contract with an AAV of $1.35 million.

Thrun, 24, is leaving the San Jose Sharks with one year left on his contract. Compared to Reaves, Thrun has barely started his NHL career with 119 games.

In 60 games last season, Thrun had two goals and ten assists. He appears to be the odd man out in a numbers game. The Sharks have many left-handed defensemen, and room is needed at the top, especially if top prospect Sam Dickinson is ready for the NHL.

Thrun joins a changing Maple Leafs team that is looking to shake up its core after another early playoff exit.
