When it comes to hockey club fanbases, there is absolutely no doubt that the Edmonton Oilers have some of the most loyal and passionate fans in the North American hockey scene. Even as the team struggled to find its footing during the Decade of Darkness, Oilers’ home attendance record would be amongst the best in the league.

Of course, the Oilers fanbase has been great, but did you know that its member base contains some pretty famous people too?

In today’s segment, we are going to explore some of the most famous celebrities who have repped the Oilers’ colours.

Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley

Inside the NBA has undoubtedly produced some of the best TV segments in the current North American sports market and its crew, led by Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley, is largely responsible for this. In addition to their work covering basketball, both of these retired NBA superstars have also shown their support for the Oilers during the recent Stanley Cup runs. Zach “Shaq” Hyman sent a signed jersey to the Kazaam actor, while Charles Barkley picked the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup Final this past playoff run.

As the game of hockey continues to grow in North American markets, it is always great to see support for our team and the game from big names such as this.

Alphonso Davies

Having lived in Edmonton for part of his upbringing, Davies is surely no stranger to the passion of Edmonton sports scene. Considered to be one of the best soccer players in the world, this former Vancouver Whitecap has not forgotten the city that he has once called home.

Despite being all the way in Germany, playing for one of the most storied franchises in Bayern Munich, Davies has continued to make time for what is important. He has been known to attend Oilers games during their playoff runs.

It is safe to say that his support for the team is always appreciated by the local fans and won’t be forgotten with Canada set to be a co-host in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Daron Malakian

Wake up! If you were around in the early to mid-2000s, your rock radio playlist likely contained hits like BYOB, Hypnotize, Chop Suey, and Toxicity from the band System of a Down. But did you know that one of the most influential bands of that time period has an Oilers fan in their midst: their guitarist Daron Malakian. While he has also been described to be a fan of the Los Angeles Kings, we are sure that he wasn’t too upset watching the Oilers get the upper hand on their division rivals four years in a row.

Chad Kroeger

If you have been at an Oilers home game, you would have likely heard Animals by Nickelback blasting in between plays. The lead singer of Nickelback, Chad Kroeger, has thrown his support behind the Oilers, promising to their fans two years ago that the Oilers would bring the Cup to Edmonton that season. While the Oilers have now come agonizingly close for two consecutive years since that promise was made, having Kroeger’s support behind McDavid and Co. has been fun to watch. Plus, I am all for Nickelback’s music to continue roaring at Rogers Place.

Here is Chad Kroeger, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl having a good time at the Boots and Hearts Festival 2023.
