With the first pick of the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, the San Jose Sharks select Simon Wang.

San Jose Sharks take Simon Wang. Highest drafted player born out of China

Wang is the highest-drafted Chinese-born player in NHL history. At 6’6, the defenseman is considered a raw talent with immense upside.

Steven Ellis of Daily Face-Off considers Wang one of the top skating defensemen at the 2025 NHL Draft.

“Wang eventually became one of the OHL’s top rookies,” Ellis wrote. “He played well enough that some scouts thought he had an outside shot of becoming a first-round pick later this month.”

In 32 games with the Oshawa Generals Wang had just two assists.

The Sharks’ next pick at the 2025 NHL Draft is at No. 53.
