Former UMass Lowell defenseman Chad Ruhwedel has announced his retirement from professional hockey.
The 35-year-old Ruhwedel played for three NHL teams – the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers. He played in 394 NHL games (25 in the playoffs) despite being undersized (5-11, 192 pounds) and growing up in a non-traditional hockey market (San Diego).
At UMass Lowell, he skated in 110 games from 2010-13, compiling 15 goals and 48 assists for 63 points. He turned pro after his junior season.
He announced his retirement through the NHLPA. His statement ended: “To my family, teammates, coaches, fans and countless others who supported me, thank you for being a part of this amazing journey.”
