Lackawanna Trail’s field hockey program has consistently been one of the Wyoming Valley Conference’s best over the past couple of years. This season it will be under the guidance of new leadership, but someone very familiar with the program.
Holly Colvin takes over for Laura Evans- who resigned at the end of last season- she has been an assistant coach with both the varsity and junior high field hockey teams and has been very involved with Lackawanna Trail’s youth program. She has had a passion for field hockey for a long time and wants to continue to bring that passion to this group of players.
“We have a solid group of upperclassmen who started last year, as well as some positions that girls are competing to fill,” Colvin said. “We have a lot of talent that we’re working with. The girls have been conditioning during the summer, and are really trying to work their best as a team.”
The cupboard is not bare for Colvin as the Lions have some all-star talent returning. Greta Krimmel enters her senior year as one of the top returning players in the Wyoming Valley Conference. Last season, she scored 17 goals and had 13 assists, and has more than 50 goals in her career. She was named a WVC first-team all-star by the league’s coaches and second-team all-state by the Pennsylvania High School Field Hockey Coaches’ Association.
“I’m definitely trying to be more of a team leader this season. I’ve also been working to be as in shape as I could be because it’s a long season that wears on you,” Krimmel said. “The goal is to get the furthest as we can through districts and maybe even into states. It’s what we’re all here working for.”
Megan Fahey is another one of the senior leaders who has started for multiple years with the Lions. Last season, she scored five goals and had eight assists, and was named all-state honorable-mention by the PHSFHCA. She is active in all of the Lions offensive and defensive sets, and acts as a quarterback with the way she executes all of those sets.
“We have a lot of new freshmen, but we’ve been watching them a lot in junior high and I think they’re going to be really good for us,” Fahey said. “Everyone has shown up for practices all summer, even though they were optional. I think we’re all really in shape and are ready to have a good season.”
Junior Emma Thomas also returns after scoring 14 goals with four assists last season. London Lisk also scored six goals as a freshman in 2024. On defense, senior Kate Jones is a returning starter. She is looking to step up as a senior and become one of the team’s leaders.
“Here in practice, we’re really working hard on our positioning on defense,” Jones said. “We need to stick together as a team. Defense involves a lot of communication, so I’ve been working really hard on that here early on.”
Lackawanna Trail will also return its starting goalie. Kiera Mulhern had 62 saves last season and posted five clean sheets, including one in the district quarterfinals. She held opponents to 26 goals all season. Many think she could be one of the top goalies in the WVC.
“I’ve been working really hard on my footwork, working extra hard and putting my all into every practice,” Mulhern said. “We all need need to work together, talk, and play the best that we can every game and practice.”
The Lions also welcome a slew of talented freshmen that saw a lot of success at the junior high level. Lyla Ryon and Alana Edwards competed in the 2024 AAU Junior Olympic Games for field hockey at Wake Forest University last summer. Lackawanna Trail also had girls play in the Keystone State Games this summer to get a little bit of a head start on the season.
The team has also been meeting all summer to go on long distance runs, do sprint workouts and work on their stick skills. Now that mandatory practices are underway, the Lions are really working hard looking to return to championship level success.
“They’re a very committed group of girls which is great from a coach’s standpoint,” Colvin said. “They’re coming here with a positive mindset giving 100% all times and working hard with each other. I’m also trying to teach them to always have a positive mindset. Even though things might not go your way all the time, we just need to keep going and keep fighting.”
