Should they be able to make the contracts work, the Toronto Maple Leafs would have a great trade offer for Erik Karlsson that could finally push them over the edge.For any trade to work, the Leafs would need Morgan Rielly to waive his NMC. It would be hard to imagine a scenario that Rielly does waive his NMC for a rebuilding club but perhaps his relationship with Kyle Dubas would be enough to sway his decision.
Nevertheless, it’s an interesting topic considering both defensemen need a change of scenery. Karlsson doesn’t want to be apart of a rebuild and Rielly has struggled with consistency over the last few seasons.
While the Leafs would be adding another asset in Nicholas Robertson to the proposed trade, ‘Leafs Morning Take’ tackle the idea and give it glowing reviews, especially with salary retention on Karlsson’s deal.
I’ll take that all day. Morgan Rielly is kind of stalled, makes $7.5 million, doesn’t produce like he used, sometimes has some brain dead stuff going on the in the d-zone.
Jay Rosehill mentions how the Leafs don’t have a need for either player, primarily Robertson, who they’ve been trying to trade over the last few seasons. The Leafs would be coming out on top with the better defenseman and they’d be getting rid of their log jam at the forward position.
To get the upside in Erik Karlsson and a guy that can QB your PP and do everything that Karlsson has done in the past, a Norris Trophy winner, and everything he’s done experience wise.
Karlsson has had a couple quieter seasons, at least to his lofty standards, in 2023-24 and 2024-25 with 56 and 53 points, respectively. However, those are still elite numbers, and he can still QB a top power play unit, as evidenced by his 101-point season from just a few years ago.
Rosehill does finish off by saying that he doesn’t see something like this happening because Pittsburgh would have no reason to do it. However, despite it’s pipe-dream qualities, it’s a solid deal should the Leafs be able to make it work.
