Valter Sedin, son of Vancouver Canucks’ Henrik Sedin, has been named to Canada Soccer’s men’s U-18 roster.
Sedin, born in 2007 to Henrik and wife Johanna, was selected to join the U-18 squad in Finland next month for a camp and a pair of friendlies against Finland and Switzerland on Sept. 5 and 7.
“We’re excited to bring this group together as we take an important step in preparing for the next FIFA U-20 World Cup cycle,” said Andrew Olivieri, Canada Soccer’s men’s youth excel director.
“This will be a first event for the 2007-born generation and an opportunity to assess the talent pool prior to integrating some of Canada’s top 2008 performers at the U17 World Cup this November.
“With the increase in youth camps across our programs, we’re creating more opportunities than ever for players to grow within our environment and be ready for the challenges ahead.”
The 18-year-old midfielder started his soccer career with local youth clubs before joining the Whitecaps FC Pre-Academy in 2020.
In 2023, he began playing with the Whitecaps FC Academy in League1, before later making his professional debut with Whitecaps FC 2 in MLS Next Pro.
Earlier this year, he joined Swedish club Hammarby as part of their U-19 squad.
Sedin holds both Canadian and Swedish citizenship and was eligible to represent either country.
Along with Sedin, a number of other players with Vancouver ties have also been named to the squad, including recent Whitecaps FC BMO Academy graduate defender Ben Nash, first team midfielder Liam Mackenzie, and Whitecaps FC 2 striker Rayan Elloumi. Former Whitecaps FC BMO Academy graduate Luka Banovic was also selected.
