The Utah Hockey Club has reportedly filed trademark extensions for two potential permanent team names: Utah Mammoth and Utah Hockey Club.

According to Cole Bagley from KSL Sports, Uyte LLC had its applications to trademark both names extended by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in February. The news comes after the team held a round of in-arena fan voting on name options at Delta Center, which ended early last month.

The three names initially announced for the vote were:

Utah Mammoth
Utah Hockey Club
Utah Wasatch

After some fan backlash, the club replaced the new “Wasatch” option with the previously popular fan choice of “Outlaws.” The team already had an extension approved on the “Outlaws” nickname in January, meaning they did not need to include it in this round of applications.

The team’s journey to finding their permanent name has been rocky. After launching another fan vote this past summer, “Utah Yeti” emerged as the clear frontrunner, but the US Patent and Trademark Office rejected several of the team’s planned names and logos surrounding the “Yeti” moniker.

The franchise was forced to abandon hopes of using “Yeti” or “Yetis” due to a clash with Yeti Coolers LLC, a popular brand known for its coolers and drinkware. Though they attempted to find a resolution with the company, the two parties could not reach a co-existence agreement.

“We continue to work through our naming process and remain on track to announce the team name ahead of the 2025-26 season,” team president Chris Armstrong recently told Bagley. “Every day we get closer, but not there yet.”

Despite their troubles finding a name, Utah is still in the playoff race in the Western Conference in their first season. Their 30-26-11 record sees them just two points behind the Vancouver Canucks for the second wild card spot in the West.
