Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach was in Brossard on Monday, testing the knee that required surgical intervention in February.

It’s important to guard against strong opinions regarding his health status, especially since we’re discussing a rather short clip without any additional information provided by a medical professional, however, Dach’s mobility seems to be in play, an encouraging sign.

Dach, 24, has missed 129 of the available 246 regular-season games on the schedule since he joined the Habs in 2022. In other words, his injuries have forced him to miss over 52 percent of the puck drops during his tenure.

The mere fact that he’s able to take part in drills with his teammates should also do wonders for his mental health, another important factor in recovering from season-ending injuries, not to mention three consecutive season-ending injuries

The first preseason game of the schedule is set for September 22, versus the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the first regular-season game on October 8, versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, giving Dach a little more runway before he could be called upon to participate in his first taste of intense hockey.

In that vein, just because Dach has made his way to Brossard doesn’t necessarily mean he’s progressing particularly well, therefore, Montreal Canadiens fans shouldn’t raise their expectations for his potential impact next season. Even if he manages to remove all the layers of rust, he’ll need time to fine-tune some of the more polished aspects of his play.

On the other hand, if Dach can eventually recapture some of the magic he showed when he first joined the Canadiens, Montreal’s playoff hopes could improve significantly, as the roster’s glaring gap, a lack of a bona fide No. 2 center, could potentially be filled internally.
