An insider has reveals how much Quinn Hughes could be looking at when it comes to his annually salary on his next contract & if the New Jersey Devils could afford it.
While the Vancouver Canucks are certainly going to do everything possible to ensure their captain sticks around long-term and will offer him an extension when he’s eligible next summer, the team needs to give him a reason to want to stay and that starts with having a competitive and successful 2025-26 season, with a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
If the Canucks’ season goes downhill and they end up missing the postseason, James Mirtle of The Athletic shared recently that the team may have to consider their options when it comes to a potential Quinn Hughes trade and of course, the New Jersey Devils, home to his two brothers Jack and Luke, would be interested in him.
“Maybe Vancouver surprises and has a huge bounce-back season that convinces their captain to stay. Feels unlikely to me, to be honest, but that’s their best-case scenario. Otherwise, they have to start contemplating what a blockbuster trade might look like and whether it’s all about futures.” Mirtle said.
Insider gives update on what Quinn Hughes’ next annual salary could look like
Whether it be with the Vancouver Canucks or any of the other 31 National Hockey League franchises, Quinn Hughes is in line for a massive payday and with the salary rising significantly in the years to come, there’s no question that he could end up being the highest-paid defenseman.
That being said, if it were the New Jersey Devils that were the ones to get their hands on Quinn Hughes, either via trade or free agency on July 1st, 2027, Mirtle believes even if he were seeking $15 million USD annually, it would be easy for them to add that to their cap.
“Even if Quinn is commanding $15 million-plus in 2027-28, that still fits – and it’s not like he’s going to be particularly old by then. This is a nice-looking group to try and build around.” Mirtle said.
On the flip side, if Quinn Hughes were to stay with the Vancouver Canucks, which fans and management are hoping for, it’s unclear if the team would be willing to go to $15 million AAV and if they were, it’ll absolutely require them to move out some money, even with the league’s salary cap expected to jump to $113.5 million USD in 2027-28.
