With training camp just around the corner, we are previewing each player on the LA Kings roster. Up next: Brian Dumoulin

Brian Dumoulin

Birthdate: September 6, 1991

Birthplace: Biddeford, Maine

Height: 6’4

Weight: 214 lbs

Position: Defense

Shoots: Left

Draft: 2nd round, 51st overall, 2009 NHL Entry Draft

2024-25 season

Brian Dumoulin split time with the Anaheim Ducks and New Jersey Devils in his 12th NHL season. In 80 games combined with the two teams, Dumoulin posted three goals and 19 assists. In five playoff games with the Devils, Dumoulin didn’t record a point, but averaged roughly 29 minutes of ice time. His high ice time was a result of injuries that impacted New Jersey’s blue line. He became a free agent at the conclusion of the Devils’ season.

🚨TRADE ALERT🚨

We have acquired D Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Herman Traff and a 2025 conditional 2nd-Round Draft Pick.

2025-26 outlook

Entering his 13th season, Dumoulin will return to Southern California, but this time with the Kings after signing a three-year deal worth $12 million ($4 million AAV). Dumolin is coming into a tough spot as the Kings will look to his services (or Joel Edmundson’s) to fill in the vacancy on the second defensive pairing left by Vladislav Gavrikov’s departure in free agency. While the contract may be a little high, I still believe Dumoulin is a good addition to the backend and can move the puck out of the zone, something that LA lacks on the left side of the defensive core.

Losing Gavrikov hurts, but I like the signing of Brian Dumoulin to fill that role.

Dumoulin seems a bit more mobile on the blueline with a lot of the same defensive instincts.

A three-year deal entering his 34-year-old season is not ideal, but a Dumoulin-Clarke pairing sounds… pic.twitter.com/kTJJrnOr4t

I’m going to sound like a broken record here. However, I’m still going to say it anyway: Dumoulin’s size, ability to play on the penalty kill, and bring veteran experience are attributes the Kings like on the backend, especially from the left side. I envision him playing on the penalty kill and either on the second pair with Brandt Clarke or the third pair with Cody Ceci. Preferably the former.
