At 39, Alexander Ovechkin has shown no signs of decline. Recently, he ranked number 17 of the NHL’s Top 20 Wingers. He also broke Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record of the most goals on April 6, playing against the New York Islanders. Although Ovi does not intend to celebrate such a career-defining milestone before he retires, fans and admirers have no reason to wait that long to honor Ovechkin’s incredible career.

Washington Capitals Legend Alex Ovechkin Bestowed with Unconventional Honor

Summers Farm has honored Ovechkin, or the “Great 8,” in a way no one saw coming: a corn maze. The Washington Capitals shared the news on the team’s X account. “This fall, @SummersFarm is honoring the #Gr8 with a six-acre corn maze to celebrate #Gr8ness.”

Part of the proceeds from the maze, which opens on August 23, will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research in Cary, North Carolina. “The maze opens this Saturday, August 23, with a portion of proceeds benefiting @TheVFoundation”.

Ovechkin’s association with the North Carolina-based cancer research foundation is nothing new. According to a March WashingtonCaps.com report, Ovechkin collaborated with the Capitals, Hockey Fights Cancer, and the V Foundation to launch “The GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer.” The initiative aimed to spread awareness and raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

Pioneering such an initiative in the last season, Ovi’s commitment to the cause remained steadfast. “As part of THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer® campaign, Ovechkin will donate an amount equal to his career goal total for every goal he scores during the remainder of his NHL career, starting with Wednesday’s Capitals game against the New York Rangers.”

Ovechkin also urged his fans to join him in bringing about meaningful change.

“Ovechkin is inviting fans to make an impact alongside him. Fans can support THE GR8 CHASE by donating $8, or any amount they can give, in honor of his historic pursuit of the NHL’s all-time goals record.”

Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, lauded Ovechkin’s devotion to pediatric cancer awareness and research. “Alex Ovechkin’s summit to greatness on the ice has been a thrill for all hockey fans, and his commitment to funding innovative pediatric cancer research will make a lifesaving impact for years to come. We are thrilled to have Alex on our team.”

Many fans worldwide recognize and admire Ovechkin’s impact on and off the ice. As the 39-year-old gears up for his 21st NHL season, the community is buzzing in anticipation about what else Ovi has in store.
