Reunion: Vancouver Canucks Receive Encouraging News From Devils On Their Hot Pursuit of Luke Hughes

The brother of Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is reportedly not close to signing a new contract with the New Jersey Devils and could end up being a trade target for Patrik Allvin.Earlier this offseason, Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford told reporters that it may not come down to money and term with their captain Quinn Hughes as he wants to play with his brothers one day and without going too far in order to avoid tampering charges, suggested bringing both of them to the B.C. so they could keep their star blueliner around.
“It may not boil down to money with [Quinn], He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.”
It’s pretty unrealistic that the Vancouver Canucks would be able to bring both Jack and Luke Hughes to the organization, partly because the New Jersey Devils have zero interest in moving them, but also because of what the potential cost could be to acquire them, however, with contract negotiations not going too well with the youngest brother, could Patrik Allvin swoop in with an offer?
Contract negotiations reportedly not going well between Luke Hughes & New Jersey Devils
According to NJ.com’s Ryan Novozinsky, the New Jersey Devils and Luke Hughes are in a disagreement over the term of his next contract, with the RFA defenseman reportedly seeking a five-year deal, while the team wants either a three-year deal or a long-term eight-year contract.
“The main obstacle, according to NJ.com, is that the Hughes camp wants a five-year deal, to align Luke’s contract with that of brother Jack Hughes‘ deal. This would conceivably set up both brothers to be unrestricted free agents ahead of the 2030-31 season.
The Devils, on the other hand, want Luke Hughes to sign either a three-year bridge deal or a full eight-year extension.” Sportsnet said on Friday.
Despite Friday’s report that the two sides aren’t close to a new deal, New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald didn’t seem overly concerned, telling RG.org’s James Murphy that something will get done eventually, possibly at the 11th hour before training camp.
“Eventually, this will get done. The 11th hour is training camp. Right? A lot of times, a lot of the stuff doesn’t get done until the 11th hour. We’re hoping we can get something done here in quick fashion, and both sides are working hard at it; that’s for sure.” Fitzgerald said to Murphy.
Hughes, 21, was selected fourth overall by the Devils in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and after back-to-back 40+ point campaigns, he’s certainly in line for a decent payday whenever he puts pen-to-paper.
If it got to the point where the New Jersey Devils were willing to entertain trade offers for the blueliner, Patrik Allvin should absolutely pick up the phone and give GM Tom Fitzgerald a call to see what it would take to bring a second Hughes brother to Vancouver.
There’s no doubt it would cost a lot, potentially including Tom Willander and an unprotected 2026 first round pick, maybe another asset or two, but regardless of the price, if bringing Luke Hughes to Vancouver would help Quinn Hughes stay with the Canucks beyond 2026-27, it’s something that needs to be done.
