A former Vancouver Canucks forward has landed a new Assistant Coaching job in the National Hockey League just months after being fired by the Seattle Kraken.
There has been a ton of change on the coaching side of things around the National Hockey League since the end of the regular season, including for the Vancouver Canucks, as Rick Tocchet left for the Philadelphia Flyers at the end of April.
Vancouver wasn’t the only Canadian team to make changes behind the bench as on Tuesday, a former Canuck was hired by one of the team’s Pacific Division rivals.
Former Vancouver Canuck Dave Lowry lands new coaching job in the NHL
At the beginning of June, less than two months after missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Seattle Kraken announced that they were firing Assistant Coaches Steve Briere and former Vancouver Canucks forward Dave Lowry.
“As Lane Lambert evaluates the coaching staff, we’ve made the decision to relieve assistant coach Dave Lowry and goaltending coach Steve Briere of their duties. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication to the Kraken and wish them luck on their future endeavors.” Kraken GM Jason Botterill said.
On Tuesday, Lowry was able to land a new coaching gig in the National Hockey League and it brings him back to Canada as the Calgary Flames announced the hiring of the former Canuck as an Assistant Coach on Ryan Huska’s staff, replacing Brad Larsen, who is not returning due to family reasons.
“The Calgary Flames announce today Dave Lowry has been named assistant coach. Former Flames assistant coach Brad Larsen will not be returning to the organization due to family reasons.
He joins Head Coach Ryan Huska and assistant coaches Trent Cull, Cail MacLean, Jamie Pringle (video) in addition to goaltender coach Jason LaBarbera to round out the Flames coaching staff.” the team said in a statement.
Lowry, 60, was a sixth-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft and went on to suit up in 165 games for the club between 1985 and 1988 before being dealt to the St. Louis Blues for Ernie Vargas.
After retiring in 2004, the Sudbury, Ontario native turned his attention to coaching and in the NHL, has made stops with the Calgary Flames (2009-10 to 2011-12), Los Angeles Kings (2017-18 to 2018-19), Winnipeg Jets (2020-21 to 2021-22) and the Seattle Kraken (2022-23 to 2024-25).
Lowry’s first game back behind the bench with the Calgary Flames is set for Thursday, October 9th as they head to Rogers Arena to take on the Canucks for Vancouver’s 2025-26 home opener.
