Red Wings center Dylan Larkin is preparing for the start of training camp in Traverse City on Sept. 18.
A guest during the Tigers’ broadcast on FanDuel Sports Detroit on Tuesday at Comerica Park, Larkin said he’s begun ‘captain’s practices’ at Little Caesars Arena.
“Going into the new season, you always have that excitement,” Larkin said during an interview with FDSD’s Jason Benetti, Andy Dirks and Daniella Bruce.
“We have 82 games, a fresh slate. Right now, guys are starting to come back into town, their kids are back in school and young guys are coming in and they look good after the summer. We made some good pickups, John Gibson in goal. I’m excited about the group.”
At age 29, Larkin, a first-round pick by Detroit in 2014, is entering his 11th season. He has 242 goals, 334 assists and 576 career points in 734 games.
“When I was a rookie, I was 19 years old and I grew up loving Darren Helm,” Larkin said. “Helmer was always in the gym, taking care of his body. He had a couple of kids at the time. I said, ‘Helmer, how old are you?’ He’s like, ‘Dylan, how old do you think I am?’ I said, ‘Ah, 34.’ He’s like, ‘Nah, I’m 29.’ And now I’m 29.”
Larkin is also a father for the first time. Dylan and his wife, Kenzy, are proud parents of Lennyn Marie Larkin, born May 19, 2025.
“It’s been awesome,” Larkin said. “We have a little baby girl, Lennyn. I’ve been home a lot with perfect timing at the end of May. Our season was over and my wife and I are just so in love. It’s been truly amazing.”
Flames add Lowry to coaching staff
The Calgary Flames made a change to Ryan Huska’s staff on Tuesday.
Dave Lowry has rejoined the team as an assistant coach with Brad Larsen departing from the organization for personal reasons.
A 60-year-old native of Sudbury, Ont., Lowry had been serving as an assistant coach with the Seattle Kraken. The move is a return to Calgary for Lowry, who had previously spent time with the Flames as both a player and a coach.
He spent the last four seasons of his 19-year playing career with the team from 2000 to 2004 and was Flames captain from 2000 to 2002. He would later serve as an assistant with the team for three seasons from 2009 to 2012.
In 1,084 career games, Lowry had 164 goals and 187 assists in 1,084 career games with the Flames, San jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks.
