The NHL season is just weeks away, and the Calgary Flames enter the 2025–26 season with nearly the same roster as last year. Time will tell whether they can perform better as a team than last season and fight their way into a playoff spot, but individually, there are a handful of players who could move up in the team’s all-time record books. Let’s take a look at who could end up where.

Career goals for the Calgary Flames

As things ended last season, long-time Flame Mikael Backlund ended the season tied with Lanny McDonald for seventh all-time in goals. With just one goal, he’ll move up to sixth and beat the mustachioed man. Backlund could also pass Kent Nilsson should he score at least 15 this season. This would put him fifth all-time in goals as a Flame.

Career assists as a Calgary Flame

Unsurprisingly, it’s Backlund again pushing for a team milestone. This time, he’s challenging former Flames captain Mark Giordano for all-time assists by a Flame. To move into sixth all-time, Backlund needs just 18 assists to tie Gio for this one, and 19 to pass him to secure the spot all to himself.

Career points as a Calgary Flame

Again, it’s Backlund pushing his way up the charts. With 563 points, he’s just one behind Gary Suter for 6th all-time. He almost certainly breaks this in the first month of the season. He does have a chance to beat Johnny Gaudreau’s record of 609, but he would need to have a monster season to do so. He likely cracks that next season, assuming he remains a Flame.

Career shorthanded goals as a Flame

Unfortunately, unless he scores 10, Backlund will be stuck in second place all-time as a Flame. However, Blake Coleman is at eight career shorthanded goals, and if he scores two, he ties Giordano for ninth all-time.

Points by a Calgary Flames rookie defenceman

Assuming all works out, the Flames should have Zayne Parekh joining them for the full season. The record for the most points by a rookie defenceman in a Flames uniform is held by Gary Suter, who had 18 goals and 68 points in 1985–86. While not impossible, he would need to put up Lane Hutson-esque numbers while jumping from the OHL to the NHL. That’s a tall order.

Some more recent comparables are Dion Phaneuf, who had 49 in the 2005–06 season and Rasmus Andersson, who had 19 in the 2018–19 season. While expectations are sky-high for the Flames’ rookie, the hope is that he plays regular minutes and grows his confidence as he makes the jump to the NHL.

Parekh currently is the second-youngest scorer all time for the team when he scored his first NHL goal in game 82 last season. Derek Morris beat him by being just ten days younger.

Calgary Flames all-time goalie statistics:

It’s hard to believe, but Dustin Wolf is already working his way into the Calgary Flames’ record books. If he picks up just 17 wins, Wolf will pass Rick Wamsley for 10th all-time in wins. If he puts up 27 this season, he’ll pass both Roman Turko and David Rittich to take eighth, and if he has a massive 36-win season, he’ll pass Trevor Kidd to take seventh. Odds are, he ends up securing eighth this season.

He is unlikely to end up in the top-10 for games played this season, but he only needs 29 games to pass Dan Vladar for 15th and 40 to pass Karri Ramo and Wamsley. If he starts 43, he’ll pass Don Edwards for 12th.

Going into this season, the expectation is that Wolf will be the definite starter for this team and could earn a spot in the record books for most games played in a regular season. While he’s unlikely to beat Miikka Kiprusoff’s record of 76 games played, if he plays 63 games, he ties Jacob Markstrom for 14th all-time.

In his first full season, Wolf recorded three shutouts. If he can put up two more this year, he’ll find his way into the top-15, tied with Mike Smith and Ramo. Three shutouts would tie him with Rejean Lemelin, and four would pull him into 9th all-time in the category.

Wolf is already a top-10 goalie in the shootout in Flames history, with three wins. If he wins four more games after overtime, he will take sole possession of second all-time.

What to watch for this season

The Flames have gone through some major roster changes in the past few years, leaving few skaters challenging for all-time team records. However, Mikael Backlund’s tenure and production is worth keeping an eye on this year as he cements himself as an all-time great for this franchise, and continues to make the case to have his number retired when he hangs up his skates.

The Flames’ goalie carousel has been well-established, and earning a top-10 spot in a goalie category is less daunting. Wolf will find his way into multiple this year, assuming he remains healthy. Time will tell how far he climbs, but dethroning Kipper is a tall order.

The key piece to watch is how rookie Parekh does going into this season. With Calder aspirations, this could be a huge season for the young defenceman. Will he find his way into the record books this season? Only one way to find out.
