Thursday night’s season opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys has been delayed in the third quarter due to lightning in the area. The Eagles lead the Cowboys 24-20 with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter.
The game is expected to resume at 11:30 p.m. ET, according to an in-stadium announcement. Players are expected to be back on the field at 11:15 p.m. for a warm-up period and fans were allowed to return to their seats as of 11:05 p.m.
At the time of Thursday’s delay, the Eagles were set to take over possession after recovering a Miles Sanders fumble as the Cowboys were in the red zone looking to regain the lead.
The Cowboys are no strangers to early-season weather delays in Pennsylvania. Last season, a Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 6 was delayed for over an hour due to thunderstorms. That Sunday night game was scheduled to begin at 8:22 p.m. ET and didn’t kick off until 9:45 p.m. ET. The Cowboys won the game 20-17 in the final seconds on a game-winning touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to Jalen Tolbert.
