The Toronto Maple Leafs need to go back to the drawing board if they wanted to add Brett Leason on a PTO as the power forward agreed to one with the Minnesota Wild.

The discussion this offseason has been who the Toronto Maple Leafs might add to their forward corps whether it be more toughness and depth down low, or that top-six forward they have been desperate to bring in.A lot of talk has been who the team could potentially bring in on a PTO, as they had some serious success previously with the signings of Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz; the latter translating that into a three-year extension with the club.

Who the Maple Leafs Missed Out On With the Latest PTO Signing

They have a few targets they could go after as the season approaches, but if they wanted to add some toughness and size, they will need to look elsewhere than Brett Leason.

We previously mentioned Leason as a candidate for the team to bring in on a PTO as a way to add to their fourth line grit and grind mentality, however he has decided to take his talents to Minnesota and sign an agreement with the Minnesota Wild.

The news was reported by The Athletic’s Michael Russo, who is deep in the weeds when it comes to Wild hockey:

Hearing the #mnwild are bringing in former Caps and Ducks right wing Brett Leason on a PTO. Right-shot who can kill penalties. Will bring more competition in camp for a bottom-six role.

220 career games, 25 goals, 54 points

It’s a savvy move for the Wild as they can see if Leason will bring the heat in the preseason and perhaps give them that insurance depth they need and also gives the team someone only 26; he’s still got time to grow.

What Missing Out on a 6-Foot-5 Forward Means for Toronto’s Depth

For Toronto, they miss out on beefing up their lineup even more, although it’s not like they lack toughness. The additions of Dakota Joshua and Michael Pezzetta certainly help in that regard, and the team already has a logjam up front. But having someone like a Lorentz, who can come in and provide a spark, throw tons of hits, give you a bit of offense and intimidate opponents is a crucial asset in your lineup, and you could see him as a much better Ryan Reaves. There are still some options for the team such as Andreas Athanasiou, Robby Fabbri, or Jakub Vrana; they can also take a look at Brock McGinn if they want to get a bit more physical.

But either way, missing out on Leason hurts because he mainly fits the Craig Berube mould, however there are still some good players available.

The team just needs to make room first.
