Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan was candid in speaking with the Toronto Sun’s Lance Hornby and had only one goal this preseason: Be a part of Toronto come October.A lot of excitement and anticipation surrounds Easton Cowan and his potential with the Toronto Maple Leafs. An offensive menace with a bit of grit mixed in, there’s a lot of hope that he can come in and be the star of the future, even if he isn’t the next Mitch Marner.
Fighting for a roster spot this preseason, he has a very good shot at making it provided he has a strong camp and impresses Craig Berube enough to give him a shot (and history shows he would be).
What Easton Cowan Said After a Summer of Size and Speed Gains
It’s not lost on the Maple Leafs top prospect either, and explained that he has some pretty lofty goals heading into 2025-26.
My mindset right now is to make the Toronto Maple Leafs. That’s my goal. We’re at an NHL camp and that’s where I’m at until further notice.
This is definitely the most confident I’ve ever felt; faster, stronger, bigger. So that’s going to help me out a lot. I’ve put in the work this summer. Now, it’s just go out there and prove I can play.
Pretty high goals indeed, and you can’t help but admire the confidence of the young Cowan, who knows that he has the talent and tenacity to be a mainstay for years.
Why Cowan’s Game Fits the Demands of Craig Berube’s Maple Leafs
Cowan also doesn’t care what the stakes are, and winning remains the main goal at the end of the day regardless of where, or what:
I love to win, whether it’s a 3-on-3 game in the summer or a Memorial Cup. You want to be the guy who goes out there and helps the team win. That mentality will help me a lot.
That sounds like the kind of person Craig Berube wants in his lineup, and Cowan’s ability to be nasty when he needs to be, and someone who wants to do whatever it takes to win is the type of player Toronto has been lacking in recent years.
Plus, there’s really nowhere else Cowan should go. He’s done dominating the OHL, and the Marlies are going to be good but it’s likely he’ll be dominating there too; so why not give him a stint and see what he can bring? We saw Fraser Minten make an impact in his debut and he’s half the offensive star that Cowan is, so who knows what could happen if he’s given time off the bat.In 185 games for the London Knights, Cowan had 220 points (84 goals, 136 assists) and was OHL MVP, Playoff MVP, won two OHL Championships, and capped it off with a Memorial Cup in in 2024-25.
