The Montreal Canadiens clearly have a very interesting option with the Anaheim Ducks to fill their famous second center position.
Forward Mason McTavish isn’t even certain he wants to re-sign with the Ducks, as he remains without a contract ahead of the upcoming season, and now we’ve just learned (thanks to the reputable Elliotte Friedman) that the Anaheim organization would be ready to start their season without McTavish.According to Elliotte Friedman, he reveals on his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Ducks would indeed be willing to begin the season without having signed their excellent 22-year-old forward.”Mason McTavish’s presence for the Anaheim Ducks’ first game of the season could be in jeopardy.”

This is a situation that could quickly escalate.
Mason McTavish far from a deal with the Anaheim Ducks: an opportunity for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens?
Knowing this, we also learn that McTavish could outright refuse to report to the Ducks’ camp, which would obviously add fuel to the fire..
On top of all that, the excellent insider Chris Johnston reports this.
“There’s still a few unsigned RFAs, I’ve still heard there’s a little bit of offer sheet talk going around the league” – Chris Johnston Show
The offer sheet therefore still seems absolutely like a possibility for McTavish.
Mason McTavish, 22 years old, is a complete 6-foot-2, 220-pound center who was selected 3rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2021 (first round).
He has totaled 140 points in 229 career NHL games, including 60 goals, and he collected 52 points in 76 games in 2024-2025, while playing on a third line and with little power play time.
