WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (KUTV) — Less than a day after reports hinted at the move, the Utah Grizzlies confirmed the club would relocate to New Jersey after the 2025-26 season.

The Grizzlies said the ECHL Board of Governors approved the transfer of Grizzlies Hockey Club to Pro Hockey Partners, who will move the team. The move was first reported by NHL insider Frank Seravelli.

The relocation marks the end of a 30-year relationship between the Utah Grizzlies and the Beehive State. The Grizzlies began playing in Utah in 1995 when the then-Denver Grizzlies moved across state lines after NHL’s Quebec Nordiques moved into Denver.

In 1997, the Grizzlies began playing in E-Center, now known as the Maverik Center, in West Valley City, a place the team has called home ever since. The team competed in the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League until 2005, when it joined the ECHL.

In the 20 years since, Grizzlies have made 15 playoff appearances and two third-round appearances.

However, with the passing of former owner Dave Elmore in 2023 and the declining health of co-owner Donna Tuttle, Grizzlies Hockey Club began the process to sell the franchise.

“This was a difficult decision, but it is one that we feel is in the best long-term interest of the franchise,” said D.G. Elmore. “Our focus right now is entirely on the fans and the community that have supported us for three decades. We are dedicated to delivering the best possible experience for our final season and celebrating the incredible memories we’ve made together.”

The Grizzlies will play one last season at the Maverik Center. The 2025-26 season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 17 with an away game in Greenville, South Carolina. The Grizzlies’ home opener in West Valley is scheduled for Oct. 25 against Idaho.

The final game at the Maverik Center is scheduled to take place against Rapid City on April 11, 2026.
