Once a top Detroit Red Wings prospect, Igor Grigorenko is out of the game as an active player. If the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has its way, Grigorenko is going to be out of the game for a very long time.

He is a former Russian national team forward and currently the general director of the Sochi (KHL) franchise. Suspended by the IIHF following a positive drug test, Grigorenko is appealing his ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“The IIHF decision has been appealed,” Grigorenko’s lawyer Yuri Zaitsev told Russian news agency TASS. “On September 1, Igor filed a brief appeal to CAS. As of today, we have received all the case materials from the other side and are preparing a reasoned position on the case.

“He did not admit his guilt during the proceedings at first instance and did not participate in the consideration of the case at this instance.”

Grigorenko’s doping sample was taken on March 12, 2015, after the KHL match between CSKA and Jokerit. The sample contained six banned drugs. Found were traces of the steroids methenolone, oxandrolone, and trenbolone. Also found were the metabolic agent meldonium and the stimulants cathine and pseudoephedrine.

Following the positive test, the IIHF suspended Grigorenko from professional hockey for four years. The disqualification period began on August 12, 2025.

Red Wings Top Draft Pick In 2001

A center/right-winger, Grigorenko was Detroit’s top pick in the 2001 NHL entry draft when he was selected 62nd overall. He suffered life-threatening injuries in a 2003 car crash while still in Russia.

Grigorenko attended his first Red Wings training camp in the fall of 2007. He wound up playing five AHL games for the Grand Rapids Griffins before the Wings cut ties with Grigorenko, and he returned to Russia.

He continued his pro hockey playing career in the KHL through the 2017-18 season. Grigorenko represented Russia in two World Championships.
