Irvine, CA – The San Jose Sharks will face the Anaheim Ducks in the first game of the Golden State Rookie Face-Off on Friday.

Top Sharks prospects, Michael Misa, Quentin Musty, Igor Chernyshov, Sam Dickinson, and Josh Ravensbergen are all expected to play.

While it is just a prospect game tonight, there are some things that I will be keeping an eye on.

The top six forwards bring the Sharks and Barracuda’s identity

Lines are never set in stone, but chemistry will be hard to come by. Inside the Sharks’ projected top six forwards, there is familiarity.

Misa and Igor Chernyshov played on the same line for the Saginaw Spirit in 24-25. Filip Bystedt and Musty haven’t played together extensively, but both have skated together on multiple occasions. Musty joined the San Jose Barracuda at the end of last season.

“I’m excited to see what they can do. Having seen it a few times now, it’s gonna be scrambling. I don’t think it’s going to be an overly clean game,” coach John McCarthy said. “[I] just want to see effort. You want to see intention, to play the right way. Those types of things are much more important than somebody messing up a controlled breakout or something structural. It’s more of an identity-type thing.”

McCarthy admitted that the lineup was more of a team decision rather than a coaching decision, but the Misa-Chernyshov connection was the easiest one to make.

“I’m excited to see them. I think they both had good practices yesterday,” McCarthy said. “Today was a pregame skate, so it wasn’t a whole lot going on, but they showed a lot of good things.”

Sounds like Ravensbergen will go the distance

Top goalie prospect and 2025 first-round pick Josh Ravensbergen will start for the San Jose Sharks on Friday. It appears that the 18-year-old will get the whole game in the crease.

The Sharks brought three goalies to the Rookie Face-Off: Ravensbergen, Matt Davis, and Christian Kirsh. McCarthy said all three goalies would play this weekend, alluding to Davis and Kirsh splitting Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings.

Ravensbergen has impressed McCarthy and many others inside the Sharks organization. Like Yaroslav Askarov, the netminder catches with his right hand. That makes it harder for McCarthy to really compare him to NHL goalies. Despite that, he is excited to see Ravensbergen in a game situation.

“It’s good. Big frame, or I should say, tall,” McCarthy said. “[He] takes up a lot of space in there. [He’s a] good kid. Calm. I like to see that in a goalie, and he doesn’t seem to get rattled.”

How will Haoxi (Simon) Wang play against other top NHL prospects?

The tall 33rd-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Haoxi (Simon) Wang, will get his first taste of hockey against a team full of NHL-affiliated prospects.

The defenseman is viewed as a project prospect who will be under the close eye of many. He is a terrific skater with elite edgework, but is still learning the game. He will be paired on defense with Luca Cagnoni. Quite the size difference as Cagnoni is listed at 5’9 and Wang at 6’6.

With Dickinson in the lineup for Friday’s game, I don’t expect to see Wang get any power-play time. With the lineup likely rotating for Saturday’s game, McCarthy is expecting to use multiple players in all situations.

“We want to give everybody an opportunity to do what they can do,” McCarthy said. “Tomorrow, we might mix it up a little bit. That first [power-play] unit is pretty potent.”

Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be seen via free stream. Expect each team participating to share a stream link shortly before the start.
