Welcome back to another Armchair GM session. This offseason has felt like one million years long, and we are still somehow waiting for Rasmus Andersson to be traded. At least this time around, we don’t need to plead with the Calgary Flames for a Connor Zary extension. Today, we take a look at some of the most off-the-wall trade proposals of this series.

Cap to the Caps?

Mikael Backlund shared earlier this summer that he wants to remain a Flame. He’d like to be still playing when the doors to Scotia Place open. While we don’t know what the future holds, we do know the Flames are always on the hunt for draft capital. If Andrew Mangiapane fetched you a second, I am not sure Backlund gets a first.

Verdict: Yes, of course, but highly unlikely.

Yegor Sharangovich for Mike Matheson

Trading Yegor Sharangovich in the first year of his five-year extension would be pretty impressive. Moving him ideally means clearing space for an up-and-coming prospect, but it also means giving up on a former 30-goal scorer very early. Michael Matheson is on an expiring contract, and the Flames don’t really need to extend him. Maybe this is a deadline deal, and Sharky manages to have another 30-goal campaign. The Montreal Canadiens need centres, and well, guess what Sharangovich can play?

Verdict: Yes, because of the long-term goal. Let’s move this rebuild along.

Miromanov to the Toronto Maple Leafs

Daniil Miromanov is on an expiring contract, and the Toronto Maple Leafs may want to add defensive depth for the playoffs. Miromanov is on the bubble this year and could very well find himself on waivers before the start of the season. I hope Craig Conroy would say yes here, considering the logjam on the backend.

Verdict: Yes.

Would Rasmus Andersson say yes to the Anaheim Ducks?

I would actually love it if the Flames were able to trade for Mason McTavish. It would most certainly mean that another centre would need to be on the move the other way. If the Flames want it badly enough, maybe they will start considering moving Nazem Kadri. I’m assuming the Anaheim Ducks are only doing this if Andersson signs an extension. If Andersson shot down the Los Angeles Kings, would he really agree to sign with a team less than 30 miles south?

Verdict: If the Flames can pinky promise they’re not extending Jacob Trouba, then I am more than happy to commit.

Favourite trade proposal of the summer

There is so much to unpack here. Giving away two young players like Mason Lohrei and Matthew Poitras for two older players and a guy who will keep the seats in the press box warm is fine on the Flames’ side. Where you lose me is with Casey Mittelstadt and Joonas Korpisalo. The Flames forward group is already crowded, and Mittelstadt hasn’t done anything to edge out any of the other guys in line for a spot.

I’d rather see a younger player like Connor Zary fight for 2C. Korpisalo has made it clear he doesn’t want to be a backup. He wants more playing time. Unfortunately for him, that isn’t happening with Dustin Wolf at the helm for the next eight years.

I’m very perplexed by the Boston Bruins including two firsts here. The Bruins are notorious for not being able to develop players, along with throwing firsts away like yesterday’s leftovers.

I’m not complaining from the Flames perspective. I think Conroy agrees.

Verdict: Yes, however, I am going to be working the phones to flip Mittelstadt and or Korpisalo.
