IRVINE., Calif. — The Los Angeles Kings competed against the San Jose Sharks in game two of three of the Golden State Rookie Faceoff Saturday afternoon at FivePoint Arena.

The Kings started the game off in complete control but ultimately lost 8-5 in a disappointing fashion.

Just 15 seconds into the game came the Kings’ first goal from Koehn Ziemmer. And two minutes later Parker Berge scored with an assist from Jan Chovan.

Today was Kirill Kirsanov’s first game in North America, and he made it count. He found the back of the net to give the Kings a 3-0 lead.

At this point, the Kings had scored three times with only seven shots on goal, which is efficient to say the least.

Kenta Isogai scored before the first period ended, giving the Kings a 4-0 lead.

Period one surely looked optimistic for the Kings, but then it all went downhill when both teams switched goalies.

Isaiah Saville guarded the net for the entirety of the first period and half of the second before Mattias Sholl took over.

Within 30 seconds of Sholl at goalie, San Jose’s Kasper Halttunen scored a power-play goal. Halttunen seemed to be honoring tradition as he scored against the Kings in last year’s rookie faceoff as well.

Filip Bystedt found the back of the net and Sam Dickinson had a power-play goal to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Kings’ struggled offensively in the second period after the Sharks’ put in Christian Kirsch at goalie, taking over for Matt Davis.

After having eight shots on goal at the end of the first, Los Angeles only added four more shots in the second, while San Jose added 12.

The third period was when the Sharks took over, scoring five goals, in comparison to the Kings’ one.

Collin Graf had back-to-back shots in the net to give San Jose its first lead.

Michael Misa scored before Kings’ Aatu Jamsen gave his team some life with a goal of his own.

But San Jose kept its offense going, clearly getting good looks with Sholl defending the net.

Mattias Havelid scored for the Sharks and with two minutes remaining in the game, the Kings decided to empty their net.

Which wasn’t the brightest idea, but they were already down by two and didn’t have much time left.

Carson Wetsch scored an empty-net goal to give the Sharks an 8-5 lead, hammering the nail in the coffin as if it wasn’t there already.

San Jose finished with 30 shots on goal while Los Angeles had 22.

To close out the rookie faceoff, the Kings will take on the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday at 1 p.m. at FivePoint Arena.
