Alex Lyon Sidney Crosby
As Sidney Crosby delivered season tickets, Mario Lemieux rolled by and couldn’t resist a little shout. It was symbolic on several levels as Crosby answered the big question as best he could, but also flashed some exasperation with being asked. Also, we’ve got a full analysis of the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects team as they pulled away for another tournament victory. We’ve got the good, bad, and the breakout performer.
Elsewhere, the Kirill Kaprizov rumors are starting, and in New York, one Rangers beat writer tried to concoct a trade, while another ridiculed the very idea. Patrick Roy apologized to Anthony Duclair, another of the acquitted 2018 Team Canada players is garnering interest, and who has the best chance to stop the Florida Panthers?
Greetings from Wellsboro, Pa. I had a choice riding home on Monday. Turn for Pittsburgh or turn for the hills for one night. I chose the hills. I’ll take the long way home today, and I even bought a little mountable video camera on Amazon, so we’ll see if I can get some video of the mountain passes.
Here’s the little postcard village of Galeton nestled at the foot of the hills. The leaves are turning.

The northern rim, and especially this little place, just makes me happy. I can’t explain it. I don’t know why. There is some vague connection to my past that is both nondescript and comforting. I’ll have the free breakfast at the Penn Wells Hotel in the Victorian events room, where class photos from the 1940s and ’50s hang, maybe have a coffee in the little shop across the street, hit the bakery for a piece of fudge if they’re open today, and linger about town for a while, then turn for home.
After all, it his now officially hockey season and I’m on duty.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Mario says hi. Sidney Crosby made core memories for one family and did his best to swat away the trade rumors. Shelly Anderson was there and did his best to convince you that he wants to remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
From Buffalo (where I received some criticism from a reader for placing too much emphasis on the tournament, which I’ll address later), the Penguins’ rookie team had a good weekend–they had to fight, scrap, and find ways to get through it all. They did and won the tournament. Here’s the final analysis and the breakout performer of the Penguins’ prospects.
As always, go to Steelers Now because there’s too much Steelers news to list. And if you want to feel better about being a Penguins fan, visit Danny Demilio and John Perrotto over at Pittsburgh Baseball now for continuing coverage of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Spector’s Hockey: Rather than listing both of the Rangers’ trade stories, one that advocated getting Kaprizov and one that called it nonsense, we’ll link you to our old buddy, Spector’s Hockey, with both of them side by side.
Sportsnet: OK, for the people in the back, Evgeni Malkin will not be traded this season. He’s come this far, and he’s staying. However, Michael Amato did go through the four teams that should be sellers this season, including the Penguins, to see what they have to offer up on the NHL trade market.
NHLtraderumors.Me: On TSN radio, Darren Dreger broached the topic. Dillon Dube, one of the Team Canada five who was acquitted and will be reinstated as of Dec. 1 (but can sign as of Oct. 15), could sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but is getting other interest, too.
New Jersey Hockey Now: There are multiple reports of other players, including Michael McLeod, drawing interest, too. The former New Jersey Devils center could be in demand.
TSN Video: OK, so who can stop the Panthers from their fourth straight Stanley Cup Final and third straight Cup?
Montreal Hockey Now: Kirby Dach has had a terrible ride. Injuries have derailed his young career, but he’ll be back this season after a lackluster comeback year and more surgery last season. Monday, the Montreal Canadiens updated his status.
Calgary Hockey Now: I like Calgary. So, we’re getting back into Calgary Flames coverage. Michael MacGivillray formerly of Match Stix and Gasoline is starting the rebirth. The Flames are one of the rebuilding teams, or are they sellers? Anyway, they’ve got some prospects who went to war against the Oilers prospects. Seven thoughts on the Calgary Flames prospects.
