The New York Rangers have a new leader. J.T. Miller was named the 29th captain in franchise history on Wednesday, the team announced.

Miller, 32, rejoined the Rangers last season in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks and immediately became one of the team’s most productive players. He recorded 35 points in 32 games with New York after the trade, finishing the 2024-25 season with 70 points overall.

“Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice,” Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury said in a release.

Miller is entering his 14th NHL season and has skated in 871 career games with the Rangers, Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning.

A former first-round pick by New York in 2011, Miller has tallied 260 goals and 449 assists in his career. He was an alternate captain in Vancouver and helped the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

J.T. Miller contract

Miller is under contract for seven years and $56 million with the Rangers. He originally signed the extension with Vancouver in 2022, carrying an annual cap hit of $8 million. The deal runs through the 2029-30 NHL season.
