SANDY — Thirteen months after breaking ground, the player and team-serving portions of the new 146,000-square-foot Utah Mammoth practice and training facility in Sandy are finished.

The team welcomed media, staff and city officials for a “soft opening” of the facility on the southeast end of The Shops at South Town on Wednesday, with a press conference staged in a yet-to-be-completed public area set for an “early 2026” opening that will include a team store, skate rental, locker rooms and concessions.

So what is open so far? Well, pretty much everything the team needs to start its 2025 training camp on Thursday.

The centerpieces of the facility are side-by-side full-size ice sheets, in addition to 40 dedicated “player-focused spaces,” including training and recovery areas, wellness and medical suites, and social amenities such as a lounge and barber shop.

“The commitment to us as players raises our standard of play and our standard of life to where we now have everything we need to succeed,” defenseman Sean Durzi said. “There’s no excuse for us, really. It’s up to us to kind of take what they’ve shown us, the commitment, and we’ll be playing better because of it.”

It’s here! 🤩

Head coach Andre Tourigny shared a story about how the hallway outside the coaches’ office was getting a little loud with player traffic, so he asked if they could install a door to help with the noise. Four hours later, they had a door.

“They are not (messing) around,” Tourigny said, using slightly more colorful language.

The favorite amenity among the players so far seems to be the sauna room, which includes both cold and hot tubs and is big enough that the club can hold a “team steam” with every player on the roster.

Speaking of the roster, it is quite large at the moment.

Sixty-six players are on the preseason roster for training camp sessions beginning Thursday. That will eventually be narrowed down to the requisite 23-man regular-season roster, but, luckily, the new facility has space for all 66 with a main and overflow locker room.

One cut has already been made to the 66, in fact, with general manager Bill Armstrong announcing Wednesday that goaltender Connor Ingram will be placed on waivers by the team after coming to a mutual agreement that a new team would be best for the 28-year-old cleared from the NHL player assistance program last month.

The Saskatchewan, Canada native started 22 games for the Mammoth, including 12 of the first 15 following the move to Utah.
