When Robby Fabbri played for the Detroit Red Wings, he was a valuable player when he was healthy.
However, staying healthy is a problem.
The hard charging forward played five seasons in Detroit and averaged 47 games per season. When it comes to injuries, particularly knee injuries, Fabbri is the league’s unluckiest player.
But the Pittsburgh Penguins are giving the 29-year-old forward another opportunity to show what he can do. He will be in their training camp on a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO). Fabbri logged 44 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season and scored eight goals. The season before, he netted 18 for the Red Wings in 68 games. That was the most games he has played since his rookie season.

GM Steve Yzerman said there was debate within the organization about whether to carry seven or eight defensemen, eventually deciding it was important for the younger group to add a veteran defenseman. That led to the signing of Travis Hamonic.
“To have eight defensemen gives us the depth,” Yzerman said. “I think over the course of the season, you’re going to expect to have some injuries. We watched Travis play a lot in Ottawa last year through injuries. He played in their top four for significant stretches and performed very well. (He’s) just a veteran guy who’s steady defensively, who plays with some edge.”
