CRANBERRY — Just prior to the first on-ice workouts of the 2025 Pittsburgh Penguins training camp, president of hockey operations/general manager Kyle Dubas had some injury updates.

Promising young player Rutger McGroarty, who played well at the end of last season and has a chance to be a top-six forward, has a somewhat mysterious upper-body injury. Dubas said the team is being cautious with him because of his age, and that his return status is to be determined.

Veteran forward Noel Acciari has a core muscle injury and is expected back around the end of the preseason.

Forward Bill Zonnon, one of the Penguins 2025 first-round draft picks, has a lower-body injury he got in a junior exhibition game. He is expected to miss four weeks.

Prospect forward Tanner Howe is still recovering from ACL surgery last season. There is no timetable for his return. Dubas noted that Howe, who he is ready, could return to junior, play with ECHL Wheeling or AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Defenseman Peyton Kettles, a fifth-round 2025 draft pick, has an upper-body injury he got in a junior exhibition game and is expected to be ready in two weeks.

Acciari and Howe skated before the opening practice.
