With Laurent Brossoit out indefinitely, the Blackhawks prepare for the season with Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom.
Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson opened the team’s 2025 training camp with tough news: goaltender Laurent Brossoit will remain out long-term following his offseason hip surgery.
Brossoit, who missed the entirety of the 2024-25 season due to a knee injury, underwent a hip procedure earlier this summer and is facing an indefinite recovery timeline. Davidson confirmed Brossoit is not expected back any time soon, casting doubt on whether the veteran netminder will be available this season or ever play for the Blackhawks.
With Brossoit sidelined, the Blackhawks are set to open the 2025-26 regular season with Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom sharing goaltending duties. Knight, the 24-year-old former first-round pick, was acquired last season and is expected to have the starting job. Soderblom, entering his age-26 season, saw significant time in goal during the last campaign and will likely operate in a tandem role with Knight.
The Blackhawks signed Brossoit last summer to add veteran experience to their goaltending group, but the 32-year-old has yet to make a regular-season appearance for Chicago due to injury setbacks.
There is currently no timetable for Brossoit’s return to on-ice activities, and further updates are expected as he progresses in his rehabilitation.
For now, the Blackhawks’ crease belongs to their young tandem, who will have the opportunity to prove themselves as Davidson and the organization look to solidify depth at a crucial position.
