With training camp just around the corner, we are previewing each player on the LA Kings roster. Up next: Pheonix Copley!

Pheonix Copley

Weight: 201 lbs

Position: Goalie

Draft: Undrafted

2024-25 season

After a long road back from rehabbing an ACL injury, Pheonix Copley returned to game action for the first time in over a year (December 10th, 2023). Right out of the gates, Copley showed rust, as expected, and was still adjusting to the game speed and movement after missing plenty of time. In his words, Copley said that going that long without playing a game took a long time to get back in the flow of things and make reads after the Reign were eliminated from the playoffs.

As the season progressed, Copley started to look comfortable and get back in rhythm. When Erik Portillo went down with an injury that cost him the rest of his season, Copley stepped into the number-one role and played better than expected. Copley started in 21 of the Reign’s final 26 games and went 10-10-1-0 with a .901 save percentage. Not eye-popping numbers, but he did his job in taking over the crease on a night-to-night basis.

The North Pole native finished the season with a 24-17-1-0 record with a 2.49 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage, and two shutouts in 42 games with the Reign. He started both playoff games for Ontario, allowing three goals against for a .920 save percentage.

The Kings organization rewarded Copley with a fresh one-year, one-way NHL contract worth $800,000. The one-way part of his contract is important because he’ll earn the same amount regardless of whether he plays in the AHL or NHL this season. It’s a well-deserved reward for his hard work in returning from ACL surgery, and possibly serving as a mentor to Erik Portillo for another year, guiding his recovery from an injury, since he has been through a long-term injury himself.
