Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has officially announced the signing of the team’s fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Monday afternoon.
As training camp rolls along, the Vancouver Canucks’ management staff are getting a better picture of what they’re working with in terms of options for their rosters in the NHL and AHL, as well as the progress some of their prospects have made over the last 12 months.
The Canucks might not have the deepest prospect pool in the National Hockey League, but they’re certainly climbing out of the bottom thanks to the decisions made by Patrik Allvin in recent years and it appears that one of the team’s prospects is getting close to signing his first contract with Vancouver.
Vancouver Canucks officially sign 2024 fourth-round pick to entry-level contract
Thomas Drance of The Athletic reported on Monday morning that the Vancouver Canucks are working on signing Patterson to his entry-level contract after impressing the club during rookie camp earlier this month and even got an opportunity to skate with the main group during the first couple of days of training camp.”Hearing that the #Canucks are working on signing Riley Patterson to his entry-level deal.
The 2024 4th-round pick showed well at prospect camp, earning a look with the main group at training camp in Penticton. He was sent back to junior on Sunday, but clearly impressed the club.” Drance said.
Not long after Drance’s report, the Vancouver Canucks made the signing of Riley Patterson official, as he put pen-to-paper on his three-year, entry-level contract.
“Riley is a right-shot centre prospect who has made strides working with our development group the past couple years.” Allvin said following Monday’s announcement.
Patterson, 19, was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver after an impressive rookie season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Barrie Colts, putting up 62 points (29 goals, 33 assists) in 68 games.
The Burlington, Ontario native returned to Barrie for a second season in 2024-25, helping them reach the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 2016, however just before the Colts’ training camp began in late August, Patterson requested a trade to give himself a fresh start and just two days later was dealt to the Niagara IceDogs.
Patterson is set to make his Niagara IceDogs regular season debut on Friday night as they begin a three game road trip in Saginaw, Michigan against the Spirit.
