This afternoon, the Calgary Flames announced that they’ve cut 13 players from their training camp roster. All 13 are to report to the Flames’ AHL affiliate in the Calgary Wranglers.

The full list is Andrew Basha, Parker Bell, Lucas Ciona, Martin Frk, Alex Gallant, Carter King, Simon Mack, Etienne Morin, Connor Murphy, Jeremie Poirier, Arsenii Sergeev, David Silye, and Carter Wilkie.

What’s next for these players

Most of these players are returning to where they have played for the past few seasons with the Wranglers. With the Wranglers’ training camp set to begin on Monday, it makes sense for the experienced players in the lower-tier training camp groups to be sent back.

A handful of these players do have intrigue to them as they’re some top prospects in the Flames system set to play their first full professional season. These include Andrew Basha, Etienne Morin, and Arsenii Sergeev.

Basha will look to stay fully healthy and bounce back from his injury-riddled 2024–25 season. He’s full of skill, but almost a year of missed development is crucial. A strong first professional with the Wranglers could put him back on pace.

Morin is coming off a season that saw him visit the Memorial Cup with the Moncton Wildcats. He’s the spectre of some rising love from fans this year, gaining respect for his skating ability and maturing game. 58 points in 62 games, with an additional 20 in 19 playoff games. A player to keep an eye on, as he could jump up faster than expected.

Finally, Sergeev recently signed his ELC, marking the end of his NCAA career. He put up some strong seasons across two different universities, with a .919 save percentage this past year. Likely the backup for Wranglers this year, behind Devin Cooley or Ivan Provsetov. However, don’t be surprised if he pushes for that starter role.

Training camp now down to 38 players

The Calgary Flames are continuing to find their lineups as the preseason rolls on. There’s still plenty of hopeful players left, such as Sam Honzek, William Stromgren, Matvei Gridin, and more.

The remaining training camp roster now sits at 21 forwards, 13 defencemen, and four goalies, for a total of 38 players left.
