Alex Ovechkin has not yet made a decision about whether the 2025/26 season will be its last in the NHL. The Washington Capitals striker, who celebrated his 40th birthday on September 18, made it clear in the training camp that he does not want to put pressure on this question.

“I don’t know if this will be my last season or not. We will see,” he said after the first unit in Arlington, Virginia, as NHL.com reports. The captain of the Capitals goes into his 21st season in the league, all in the Washington jersey. At the same time, his five -year contract worth $ 47.5 million, which he signed in the summer of 2021, also expires. Talks with team owner Ted Leonsis or General Manager Chris Patrick about the future have not yet existed. According to NHL.com, Patrick emphasized in August that he would leave Ovechkin to the decision when and whether he was talked about a continuation of his career.

In the training camp, Ovechkin initially started with a short shock when he had to leave the ice early due to a slight lower body injury. However, coach Spencer Carbery spoke of a precaution, and Ovechkin himself also stated that it was not very worried.

In terms of sport, the Russian also demonstrated in the previous year that despite his age, it was one of the top goal hunters in the league. With 44 goals, together with Buffalo striker, he took third place in the NHL, although he had missed 16 games because of a broken leg. On April 6, 2025, he also wrote history: With his 895th goal, he overtook Wayne Gretzky as the most successful goal scorer ever.
