TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Detroit Red Wings returned to the ice Thursday for training camp at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. It was early glimpse at what the centennial season team might look like.

Fans were treated to drills and three periods of scrimmages while players prepared for the upcoming season. The annual camp provides an opportunity for the team to compete and build on summer conditioning.

“It’s a good format where we scrimmage every day and we get to compete — right off the back of the summer habits,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said.

For the coaching staff, Day 1 was a success.

“I think we got a lot out of the day, at least what we targeted. And we’re going to work every day and build our A-game,” Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan said.

The camp was open to the public, with tickets available for daily practice and scrimmage sessions. Following the three-day camp, the annual Red and White Game takes place Sunday, Sept. 21, at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
