Orange shirts are nothing new to the Edmonton Oilers.

So, while everyone else was wearing them across the province Tuesday, the club was making a bit of a fashion statement of its own in the heart of the Alberta capital.

While the players were in their white and blue third-uniform gear, the coaching staff skated into practice sporting — how to put this gently? — a new (and hopefully brief) look, wearing nondescript one-colour jumpsuits bordering on pajamas.

What colour, you ask?

Take a deep breath, close your eyes and imagine inventing the perfect colour, and then giving up halfway through. And then using that, and only that, from head to toe.

Think less blue, more blah.

More Ghostbusters, less job that actually exists on planet Earth.

Now, fashion is in the eye of the beholder, sure. But some of the Oilers players (and even some coaches, themselves) had to be holding in some laughter as they skated off the ice and past assembled media at the Downtown Community Arena.

“These are the worst I’ve seen,” one said of the unintentional runway models.

“Never again,” said another, shaking his head.

Perhaps forward Adam Henrique summed it up best when asked what he thought about his coaches’ new fashion: “We’ll maybe go back to the drawing board.”

OK, so maybe it wasn’t that bad and the suits weren’t all but an arm and a leg stripe away from encroaching on 1990s Eastern European mafia territory. Minus the gold chains, thankfully.

Then again, in the world of fashion, what’s old is new again. And just because it’s called fashion sense doesn’t mean it has to make sense to everyone else.

And, hey, if this whole hockey thing doesn’t end up working out, Knoblauch and Co. can always open a painting business together, with their feature colour being — what else? — coaches ‘n’ cream.

If all else fails, they still have plenty of time before Halloween to put together some homemade proton packs and go around the city bustin’ ghosts in their new duds.
