The Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman will have to look at these three trade candidates soon; capturing someone like Justin Holl‘s cap hit in a trade makes too much sense at this point in the rebuild.
General Manager Steve Yzerman hopes the team can progress this season as the rebuild continues.
For fans, they want results right away, as they haven’t seen the team compete in the playoffs since 2016.
In order to get the most out of a rising salary cap, the team will have to look for a trade and three candidates have just been named by NHLTR to be on their way out if a deal comes to fruition.
Personally, this is not the right move, one specific name should not be dealt.
The Trade Candidates for the Detroit Red Wings in 2025-26
The Detroit Red Wings need to find a way to relieve themselves of Holl’s cap hit. He’s been an excellent placeholder for the next prospect who will take his spot. But that would require Holl to be traded.
He is owed $3.4 million and is in the last year of his contract with the Red Wings, with a 10-team no-trade list. Yzerman will have to retain a percentage of salary to make it work.
The Detroit Red Wings could trade the 38-year-old goaltender to teams that want to add some depth in the net. His 21-win season in 2024-25 and .901 save percentage could make him a target for contenders this year.
Could he be welcomed back into Edmonton? It’s a good question, but they did just add Connor Ingram to the mix this week.
Patrick Kane is a natural leader and still a 20-goal scorer in the NHL. For contending teams, his experience in the playoffs will be desirable for teams like the Vegas Golden Knights, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, and Edmonton Oilers.
Last season he scored 59 points (21-38) with the Red Wings.
