Ahead of their final pre-season game tonight, Leafs head coach Craig Berube has announced his plans for both Dennis Hildeby and James Reimer. After Anthony Stolarz played the entire game on Thursday night, where he was fantastic in a losing effort that saw him stop 39 of 41 shots, the Leafs are turning to their two relief netminders tonight in Dennis Hildeby and James Reimer. With Joseph Woll still sidelined indefinitely due to a personal family matter, this will be a great opportunity for both goalies to finish out the pre-season on a high note.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has revealed what the plan will be as both Reimer and Hildeby are expected to split the game. This will be the former’s first pre-season appearance with the Leafs after signing a PTO, while this will be the latter’s third game in goal.
Hildeby has done well so far as he stopped all 23 shots he faced against Ottawa before being relieved for Artur Akhtyamov, as well as an 11 save effort against Montreal that saw him play the whole game.
As for Reimer, this will be a heartfelt moment for all involved, considering this will be his first game with the Leafs since 2015-16. The long-time veteran has since played 318 games with San Jose, Florida, Carolina, Detroit, Buffalo, and Anaheim.
With a timeline not yet revealed for Woll’s return, Hildeby is expected to back up Stolarz, which is what also happened this time last year when Woll got hurt before the opener.
The Swedish netminder had a strong 2024-25 campaign that saw him post a 16-9-4 record in the AHL to go with a 2.55 GAA and a .908 SV%, as well as a 3-3-0 record with the Leafs in his first taste of NHL action.
Look both netminders to get close to an even split tonight with Hildeby starting and Reimer finishing things off.
